During my stay in Villa Serrana in Uruguay (March 2024), I was told by the hotel manager that the area was known for these deer (known there as Guazubirá). I set out to find them, but after a few hours I was ready to give up. On my way back I was typing messages to a friend, and when I looked up, this one was staring right at me.

The tufted deer (Elaphodus cephalophus) is a small species of deer native to the forests of China and northeastern Myanmar. It is named for the tuft of black hair on its forehead and is also characterized by small, backward-curving antlers and prominent upper canines, especially in males.
